PhD Studentship in History of Disability in Wales Post-1700

PhD Studentship
History Of Disability In Wales Post-1700

Swansea University is sponsoring a three-year PhD studentship in the
History of Disability in Wales post-1700 as part of a strategic
commitment to build on its strength in Welsh medical history.

Disability History has emerged over the past decade as a significant
area of academic research. Historians of disability are demonstrating
how perceptions of impairment are socially and culturally constructed
and subject to change over time. Yet there has been very little
research on disability history in Wales. This studentship aims to
address this neglect.

The topic for the research will be selected from the following list
after consultation between the successful holder of the studentship
and the project leaders, Dr David Turner (History, School of
Humanities) and Professor Anne Borsay (School of Health Science):

* Disability and the eighteenth-century poor law;
* Asylums and hospitals for disabled people;
* 'Special' education in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries;
* Cultural representations of disability;
* Rehabilitation;
* Industrial-related chronic illness and disability;
* Post-war oral histories of disabled people.

It is anticipated that the studentship will commence on 1 October 2009
and the candidate must enrol no later than 31 January 2010. Home/EU
tuition fees are included and a standard maintenance allowance
[£16,680 for 2009/10] will be paid.

Applications are invited from UK/EU candidates with a good first
degree in History or a related discipline and a qualification at
Masters level will also normally be expected. Please submit with the
completed application form a curriculum vitae and a letter of no more
than 1,000 words, explaining why you wish to apply for the studentship
and how you would undertake the project.

The closing date for applications is Friday 19 June 2009 and we expect
that interviews will take place during the week beginning Monday 20
July 2009.

Informal enquiries can be made to Dr David Turner (E-mail:
d.m.turner@swan.ac.uk; telephone: 01792 602975) or Professor Anne
Borsay (E-mail: a.borsay@swan.ac.uk; telephone: 01792 295810).

Application forms can be obtained from the Postgraduate Admissions
Office, Swansea University, Singleton Park, Swansea SA2 8PP (E-mail:
admissions@swan.ac.uk; telephone: 01792 295111), or downloaded from
the university website: http://www.swan.ac.uk/postgraduate/apply/.
Completed application forms should be returned to the Postgraduate
Admissions Office.

When replying to a message please delete the message that you are replying to. Doing this will allow people who subscribe to the digest version of the list to receive messages in a condensed form. Also this will generally free up the list and not "clog" inboxes.

Also when posting articles please only post a link with a brief summary of the article instead of posting the entire article. This is done to respect copyright laws.
